Summary

Evaluation of Composite Pavement Unbonded Overlays
CP Tech Center (funded by FHWA and Iowa Highway Research Board) Investigates numerous variables involved in the performance of thin whitetopping (surface preparation, overlay thickness, synthetic fiber reinforcement usage, joint spacing, and joint sealing) through design, construction and testing of full-scale test sections in Iowa between 2002 and 2006.
Design and Construction Procedures for Concrete Overlay and Widening of Existing Pavements CP Tech Center (funded by FHWA, Iowa DOT, Iowa Highway Research Board) Study provides the engineer with a way to use existing deflection technology coupled with materials testing and a combination of existing overlay design methods to determine the design thickness of the portland cement concrete overlay.
Integrated Materials and Construction Practices (IMCP) for Concrete Pavement
CP Tech Center (sponsored by FHWA, ACPA and numerous transportation agencies, including TxDOT) Comprehensive manual and videos that include information on basics of concrete design, materials, concrete properties, cement hydration, cracking, durability, mix design and construction.
Whitetopping: State of the Practice ACPA (contact Cement Council of Texas to request free hard copy of this publication) Engineering manual includes comprehensive coverage of all aspects of concrete overlays on existing asphalt pavement. It includes information on the benefits, history, performance, design practices, and construction of all types of whitetopping.
Unbonded Overlays Give New Life to Old Streets ACPA (contact Cement Council of Texas to request free hard copy of this publication)
Whitetopping spells relief in Iowa ACPA, Iowa Concrete Pavement Association Article on use of whitetopping project experience in Iowa.

Summary

Full-Scale Bonded Concrete Overlay on IH-30 in Fort Worth, Texas 1998, revised 2000 TxDOT, University of Texas, FHWA Treviño, M., McCullough, B.F., & Krauss, T. The main objective of this project is to evaluate the technical and economical feasibility of an expedited bonded concrete overlay (BCO) of an urban section of IH-30 in Fort Worth and to monitor its performance. The report presents a strategy to expedite the BCO in conjunction with the widening of the road. The economic analysis included in the report shows the feasibility of implementing a BCO in lieu of a full-depth reconstruction.
Performance of Old Concrete Under Thin Overlays 2006 TxDOT Research and Technology Implementation Office
This report from the TxDOT Research and Technology Implementation Office discusses the rehabilitation of under-designed PCC pavements in Texas that have provided satisfactory performance for much longer than their original design lives.
Whitetopping Construction and Early Performance in Illinois
2002
Illinois DOT
Winkelman, T.J.
This report summarizes the construction and early performance of seven whitetopping projects in Illinois (three intersections, four mainline pavements). Details of the design, construction methods, construction costs, and early performance are addressed.
Long-Life Concrete Pavements in Europe and Canada 2007
FHWA
Hall, K., Dawood, D., Vanikar, S. Tally, Jr., R., Cackler, T.,, Correa, A.,Deem, P., Duit, J. , Geary, G., Gisi, A., Hanna A., Kosmatka, S., Rasmussen, R., Tayabji, S., & Voigt, G.
This report provides details of a scanningstudy to identify design philosophies, materials requirements, construction procedures, and maintenance strategies used in Europe and Canada to build long-life concrete pavements. The study includes discussion of several overlay projects.
